Customer's Primary and Secondary Email

Customer can have two different email addresses and the one, which is visible, depends on the system configuration:

  • Primary Email
  • Secondary Email

Primary email address is always stored with a customer record, regardless of configuration. It is unique among all customers in the system. Secondary email address is stored only if system is configured that way. It does not need to be unique among the customers.

Primary Email Configuration

System can be configured to use primary emails in the Customer System Setup -> Use Secondary Email as Primary if Unique: No.

In this scenario, customer's email addresses must be unique. When adding / updating a customer, duplicity check is done for given email address. Only if the email address is unique, form can be submitted. After submission, primary email address is synchronized also to main contact person and user.

This email address is then used for email sending.

Secondary Email Configuration

System can be configured to use secondary emails in the Customer System Setup -> Use Secondary Email as Primary if Unique: Yes.

In this scenario, customer's email addresses may be duplicate. There is no check for the email duplicity when adding / updating a customer.  When the form is submitted, primary email is constructed from the secondary one as a unique address and stored with the customer too. Suffix +x is added to the secondary email address if some customer already has the provided email address.

Example:

  1. Customer is created with email address john.doe@example.com => primary email address is stored as john.doe@example.com (no one has this address yet).
  2. Customer is created with email address john.doe@example.com => primary email address is stored as john.doe+1@example.com.
  3. Customer is created with email address john.doe@example.com => primary email address is stored as john.doe+2@example.com.

When customer is created / updated, secondary email is synchronized to main contact person and user.

When an email is sent to the customer, his primary email address is used.
